BERE REGIS 140 (5pts) lost to WIMBORNE 144-6 (22pts) by four wickets

BERE Regis fell to a second-straight loss in the 100-over portion of the Wessex Internet Dorset Premier League season as champions Wimborne won by four wickets.

With heavy rain on Friday but improving weather throughout Saturday, conditions seemed likely to play into the hands of the team batting second.

So it proved as Bere skipper Brian Keegan lost the toss and found his team asked to bat first at Bere Regis Rec.

Other than an in-form Cam Robertson, Wimborne had no trouble in gradually eroding the Bere line-up.

Alfie Appleby-Ingram (3-27), Simon Watkins (2-18) and Freddie Williams (2-28) all enjoyed good days out with the ball.

However, the wicket of Robertson (79) proved hard to take and it was only after a 45-run stand for the ninth wicket with Dean Rogerson (23) that Robertson perished stumped off Hugh Atkinson (1-12).

Bere were eventually dismissed for 140, leaving Wimborne heavy favourites.

However, Bere’s opening bowlers were in superb form and battled away to give their side a chance of victory.

Off-spinner Sam Goodhew took the first over and ended with 3-44, while Jacob Kennard claimed a miserly 2-15 from his 12 overs.

Together, the duo accounted for Wimborne’s top five but in Atkinson they found a tougher prospect.

Atkinson was dropped early in his innings and continued to chance his arm throughout a knock of 54 that was balanced on a knife edge.

Although he departed to Harry Green (1-6), his share in 75 for the sixth wicket with Harry Fairchild (30no) broke the Bere resistance as Wimborne got home with plenty of time to spare.

Speaking to Echosport, Keegan said: “Cam batted really well for his 79 and the only other real contribution was Dean with 23.

“All the rest of us hung around. Because of the weather, we probably had the worst of the conditions. If you lose the toss, there’s not a lot you can do about that.

“You’ve got to buckle down. Ifs, buts and maybes, but if we could’ve eked out another 40 runs the it would’ve put a different perspective on the game.

“In the field, that’s probably the best our ground fielding as been all season.

“The opening bowlers Jacob and Sam, between the two of them, bowled extremely well.

“Jacob’s line was immaculate and Dean bowled well with no luck. We dropped Hugh was he was on about 15 or 20.

“To be fair, he got them over the line. Had we got him when we should’ve done, it again would’ve put a different perspective on it. There’s a lot of positives to take out of it.”

Elsewhere, Bere Regis Seconds lost their derby at Dorchester Seconds by 13 runs.
