CHARLTON DOWN 342-4 (20pts) beat WAREHAM 112 (4pts) by 230 runs

CAMERON Lucas smashed the biggest score in the Dorset League this season as Charlton Down secured a massive 230-run win over a depleted and injury ravaged Wareham in County Division Three.

Lucas was the star of the run fest, batting for over two hours in the heat, hitting a massive innings of 168 which including 34 fours and a six as the hosts posted 342-4 from 40 overs.

Down openers Jack Eveleigh and Lucas batted superbly and their 100-run partnership came up in the 17th over, before going on to record their 200-run partnership in the 26th over.

They reached an astonishing opening stand of 215-0 before Eveleigh was bowled for 35 by Chris Rabjohns (2-36).

Lucas also perished to Rabjohns 15 runs later – short of a double century with plenty of overs remaining – to end a brilliant batting display which included every shot from the coaching manual.

With only 10 overs remaining there was no let up for the Wareham fielders as Sam Roles and Sid Dunford added 103 in just seven overs.

Roles hammered eight fours and four sixes in a quickfire 68 and was out bowled with three overs to go.

Dunford remained not out on 28 and Nick Voss (3) was run out off the last ball of the innings as the hosts posted a total in excess of 8.5 runs per over.

The Wareham innings started slowly with James Pretty (1-17) having Conor Hale well caught by Lewis Harrington for one and then John Whyte was trapped by Dan Stevens (1-9) for 13 with the score on 18-2.

A promising partnership of 60 between the stylish Ashley Hayes 37 and hard-hitting Martin Upshall (41) ended when Hayes was bowled by Matt Stevens.

Stevens then completed his hat-trick when he removed Sam Axon and Joe Winks, finishing with 4-6 from four overs.

With only nine batsmen it was always going to be a tall order and Charlton Down’s bowling unit was simply too powerful to cope with.

Wareham started with 10 players and then due to injury ended with nine.

The victory cements Charlton Down’s place at the top of the league, seven points above Chalke Valley ahead of a trip to Martinstown Seconds on Saturday (1.30pm).
