DANNY Clay is the key ingredient the Terras have been missing in recent seasons, according to Brendon King.
Not only has the Weymouth boss been impressed with the combative midfielder’s performances on the pitch but he is also delighted with the positive impact he is having on those around him.
King told Echosport: “Danny has come in this summer and been fantastic. “He does not stop talking and organising, and he leads by example both in the way he plays and conducts himself off the pitch.
“We have missed that type of presence in the middle of the park and you can already see the difference he is making to the rest of the side.
“Despite being only 26, he has bags of experience and just like Barry McConnell and Scott Walker, there is no doubt he is having a positive influence on the rest of the squad, particularly the younger ones.”
Since Warren Byerley’s departure to Kett-ering Town, the issue of the club’s captaincy has been a constant source of debate. Walker has worn the armband for much of pre-season and it appears he is the favourite to land the role full-time.
When asked for his thoughts on the subject, King added: “I have not decided who is going to be captain yet but at the moment Scott is in the box-seat.”
The Terras will entertain Chickerell United tonight in a hastily-arranged friendly at the Bob Lucas Stadium (7.45pm), which will now take place behind closed doors after it emerged it was too late to get the match sanctioned by the FA.
Dorchester Town's trip to Hamworthy Recreation has been postponed so instead they will take on Portland United in a training match this evening.
The Magpies' reserve side will travel to Grove Corner tomorrow evening for a friendly with their island counterparts (6.30pm).
