THE highlight of the South West’s hillclimb season is arguably the visit of the country’s premier series, the Avon Tyres British Hillclimb Championship, to Wiscombe Park this weekend, which will be organised by the local Woolbridge Motor Club.
Challengers for the title will be attacking the lead that the current champion Scott Moran has amassed so far this season.
The series only visits Wiscombe Park once during the season so the fastest driver/car combinations will not only be fighting each other but bidding for a new hill record should track conditions allow.
Although the focus of attention will be on these ultimate machines, there will be a huge supporting cast of saloon and sports cars.
Included in the entry of over 130 will be competitors contesting classes for saloon and sports cars in addition to the vintage Austin Sevens.
More local drivers will battle for glory in the modified specialist production car class where Westfield sports car enthusiasts Graham Blake and Geoff Blake will go head-to-head in their new SEi.
Following a heavy accident earlier in the season, the Weymouth duo will be making their Wiscombe debut with the new machine which is equipped with fuel injection and offers greater power.
The father and son combination will not be providing the only inter-family battle as Frampton husband and wife team Rod and Hayley Thorne will both be competing in the over two litre sports libre category with their Pilbeam MP43 sports racer.
Rod has forsaken the single-seater class with the Pilbeam MP58 to re-acquaint himself with the massive torque available from the five-litre Rover V8 powerplant.
