AFTER a 21-year wait, ex-Terras’ boss Gerry Gow returns to Ashton Gate tomorrow for his long-awaited testimonial (3pm).
Gow, who managed Weymouth from 1989 to 1990 and now lives on Portland , made 445 appearances for the Robins between 1969 and 1981 before moving to Manchester City.
The Scot then went on to appear for the latter in their 1981 FA Cup final defeat to a Ricky Villa-inspired Tottenham Hotspur.
Despite his length of service for Bristol, the tenacious midfielder has had to wait more than two decades for his testimonial.
And to mark the occasion, legends from both clubs with descend on Ashton Gate tomorrow afternoon.
Among those turning out in red will be Brian Tinnion, Tommy Doherty, Lee Trundle and Darius ‘Jacki’ Dziek-anowski while the Man City line-up is set to include the likes of Joe Corrigan, Andy Dibble, Eric Nixon, Peter Beagrie, Paul Dickov, Gary Bennett, Dave Bennett, Asa Hartford, Kevin Horlock, Peter Barnes, Jeff Whitley and Fitzroy Simpson.
Gow, 60, said: “I could have had the testimonial when I went to Man City but I wanted to concentrate on being there. I was at a new club and I didn’t want any distractions.
“I then started doing a few evening events at different football clubs and a set of supporters who came along started talking about a testimonial.
“We approached Bristol City and the PFA to see if it was something that was still a possibility and it went from there.
“I never really thought about it previously but it snowballed from there.
“It’s not about getting a group of lads together, taking money off people and having a Mickey Mouse game, we are trying to put on the best day we can.
“We are also working in conjunction with Kicking Out For Kids and the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and there will be an auction after the game.
“I’ll have my boots on as well and see if I can last for 10 minutes or so.”
