A RAIN-HIT Weymouth Town Tennis Tournament staged a successful conclusion as the sun finally came out for finals day.
Clif Moreton was the star of the show as he appeared in three finals, taking two trophies. The first of which was won in the singles competition, after an epic tussle with Tom Legg.
Legg held the upper hand early on, leading the first set with an early break, but Moreton had come out with intent and broke back to force a first set tiebreak.
However, Legg held firm and took the set. Moreton then grabbed a break early on in the second and Legg countered by attacking his opponent’s backhand but failed to break it down, going down 6-4 to level the match. At this stage, Moreton stepped up another level and ran away with the final set, notching up a notable victory.
Moreton then joined forces with Justin Smith to record a more straightforward victory in the men’s doubles over Ed Evans and Alan Cash. At first, the match did look like it may be more of a challenge as Cash held serve and the Moreton serve was broken to go to 3-2 but, Smith in particular, opened out and flashed winner after winner, with Cash and Evans only managing one further game.
However, Moreton’s quest for a hat-trick of titles, partnering Rhose Lawes, was interrupted by an inspired performance from Adam and Glenda Fraser in the mixed doubles.
After exchanging games early on, the Frasers finally broke serve in the sixth game of the set and went on to take it 6-3. The second set was a marathon, break point after break point passing both couples by, but it was Adam Fraser who had the chance at 5-4 to serve the match out and blasted down four unreturnable serves, including two aces, to grab the title.
Lawes did manage to pick up a trophy on the day, partnering Caroline Cash, and overpowering Carly Dean and Sarah Thomas. Dean and Thomas had done well to reach this stage and put up a spirited fight but came up against fierce opposition in the final and went down in straight sets.
The mixed doubles plate was won by fast-improving youngsters Ryan Biss-ett and Annie Redding who had played a good tournament, finishing it off well with a victory over Dave Tyler and Lorna Morrissey.
George Morrissey won the under-16s’ title after Millen Hurrion pulled out through injury.
