TWO teams of legends are set to descend on the Bob Lucas Stadium for a unique charity match in memory of Dave Platt and the Purbeck Isle tragedy.

The encounter will see Weymouth Veterans clash with Yeovil Town Veterans and the star-studded line-ups will no doubt see fans from both clubs turn out in force for what promises to be a fantastic afternoon.

The Terras are set to include the likes of Willie Gibson, Pete Conning, Ian Hutchinson, Alex and Simon Browne and current first-team boss Brendon King in their ranks while the Glovers have called up big-hitters like Paul Thorpe, Steve Thompson and Mickey Spencer.

Match organiser Rex Buttle said: “The match will take place on Sunday, July 22 with kick-off at 2pm, and all the proceeds will go to the St Margaret’s Hospice and the Purbeck Isle Memorial Fund.

“Between us all we have managed to put together two excellent sides including many players that fans probably haven’t seen for many years.

“Not only will it be good to see them in action again but it will also give people the opportunity to renew old acquaintances and reminisce in the bar afterwards.

“Kicking off the match will be Weymouth’s very own Dickie Borthwick and we are also hoping to have the likes of Shaun Teale and Paul Arnold there along with Rick McQueen, the Billericay star who has appeared at Wembley twice for his former club.”

Former Terra and Yeovil striker Platt lost his lengthy fight against non-Hodgkin lymphoma at the age of 55 back in April just a couple of weeks before the Purbeck Isle fishing boat went missing in mid-May with three Weymouth men on board.

The wreck was later discovered along with the body of skipper David McFar-lane but crewmen Robert Prowse and Jack Craig are still missing.

In the wake of the tragedy, the Purbeck Isle Memorial Fund was set up, spearheaded by the Weymouth and Portland Licensed Fishermen’s and Boatmen’s Association, and support for the cause has been huge.

Admission to the charity game will be £3 for adults and £1 for under-16s. Team sheets will also be available at £1 each.
