WEYMOUTH Basketball Club marked the end of their 2011/12 season with their annual presentation evening at Weymouth Sports Club.
The club have enjoyed continued success over the season, developing their eight teams while having three players called up to the South West regional team and adding more players from all over South Dorset.
Highlights also included improvements in the youth development programme, co-ordinated by Alex Fuhrmann, on Saturday afternoons.
The under-12, under-14 and under-16 teams all competed in the SABA (Solent Area Basketball Association) Central Venue Leagues, with the under-12s and under-16s both coming within one game of the title.
The men’s teams – Weymouth Tandoori Bandits, GH Podiatry Cowboys and Raiders – all showed a competitive spirit in their respective leagues with mixed results.
GH Podiatry Cowboys displayed their youth and enthusiasm, winning some very high profile games in their respective competition.
Tandoori Bandits finished in a respectable mid-table position, while the Raiders are still looking for their first win as they aim towards the new campaign.
Weymouth Huskies (ladies), showed determination and promise, switching to the more competitive Solent League but unfortunately they lost players to injuries and career changes.
This resulted in a very tough season, though they received praise from the league in their approach and spirit.
Presentations were made to individual players from each team in the club, these included: Most valuable player, most improved, best defensive and clubman.
Two more awards were also made to those in the club who had made the effort off the court, in the form of coach of the year and the Huw Price Service to Basketball Trophy.
Coach of the year went to volunteer under-12 assistant Russ Weaver while the latter, given for outstanding service to the club, was presented to Tandoori Bandits and Huskies’ head coach Che Osborne.
Club chairman Tim Kingman said: “We would like to thank all members and parents for attending the evening, and to our sponsors Weymouth Tandoori and GH Podiatry for their support throughout the year.
“It’s clear from our turnout that we are having a positive impact on our community and look forward to adding to the success.”
The club’s senior men’s teams are training throughout the summer and welcome those who wish to attend at the Weymouth College Sports Hall.
