SIR JOHN Colfox came out on top in the Year Seven Area Cup final at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

Having overcome Dorchester Middle School in the last four, the Bridport boys were extremely excited to be playing in their first cup final.

However, they could not have got off to a worse start as Wey Valley opened the scoring just two minutes in courtesy of a simple ball over the top of the defence.

Colfox eventually settled and began to play some good football with the midfield trio of Jaydon Scadding, Dane James and Sam Handyside assuming control.

Midway through the first half, Harry Kilcoyne and James worked their way through and the ball bounced to Riley Weedon, who volleyed into the bottom corner with his weaker foot to level proceedings – the opposing keeper rooted to the spot.

Marshalled superbly by Jack Cox, the Bridport outfit snuffed out anything Wey Valley had to offer and the Weymouth side were often restricted to long-range efforts.

And with two minutes of the half remaining, Colfox edged ahead.

Tommy Craven was too quick for the Wey Valley striker and put in a challenge that eventually broke to James, who made one of his now famous rampaging runs down the wing.

After a few twists and turns, he managed to get the ball across the goal and it broke to danger man Weedon, who did not need a second invitation to score his second of the match.

Wey Valley were the better side as the second half got underway and it looked like only a matter of time before they grabbed an equaliser.

However, resilient defending kept them at bay.

Then came the major turning point as a Wey Valley player found himself one-on-one with just gloveman Jordan Scadding to beat.

The latter pulled off an incredible save from point-blank range and the lead remained intact.

And with just five minutes left on the clock, victory was sealed in emphatic fashion.

Handyside picked the ball up in his own half and embarked on a mazy run that saw him beat several players before slotting home.

“Much credit must go to the coaching in the local community as most of the team play for Bridport and it is patently obvious that they are very close and love playing football.”
