Dorchester and Weymouth were both left frustrated by the weather on the opening weekend of the Dorset Premier League campaign.

Both teams saw their top-flight curtain-raisers, against Broadstone and Poole Town respectively, fall to the recent wet spell last Friday afternoon but they were not the only ones to suffer postponements.

The Division Two clashes between Martinstown and Dorchester Seconds, Cranborne and Beaminster, and Poole Town Seconds and Weymouth Seconds also suffered the same fate along with Portland Red Triangle’s home clash against Cattistock in Division Three.

Dorchester first-team skipper Martyn Richards and his Weymouth counterpart Dean Janaway summed up the mood.

Richards said: “As expected the groundsman just could not get on the pitch to do the necessary preparations so we just have to accept that we will be one of many victims of the rainfall – not just locally but around the country.

“It’s just one of those things. All we can do is write it off as a bad week and turn our attention to this weekend’s game at Blandford and hope we manage to get a game in up there.”

Janaway added: “It’s been a pretty horrendous start to the season so far. All our pre-season friendlies had to be cancelled, we’ve only trained outside once and now our first game of the campaign has come and gone as well.

“It’s very disappointing because it’s a short season and all we want to do is just get out there and play, but at the end of the day there is nothing you can do about the weather.”

One team that did see action was Bridport (57 all out) in Division Three but they slumped to a disappointing home defeat against Winton Seconds (149 all out).
