SALISBURY CITY LADIES 0 WEYMOUTH LADIES 1 ELOISE Adams pulled off a penalty save for the second week running as Weymouth Ladies recorded one of the greatest victories in their history by beating South West Premier Division rivals Salisbury City in the first round of the FA Women’s Cup.

With inspirational sweeper Jess Turk, midfielder Jody Urwin and wing-backs Sophie Ramsbottom and Bryony Webb all missing, boss Tim Davis called in Dorset FA Centre of Excellence star Molly Tighe for her debut along with reserve-team regulars Laura Fisher and Elle Saunders and they did not disappoint.

Zoe Acutt, Rosie Sharpe, Bianca Randall and Emma Acott also went into the game carrying knocks but the visitors’ work-rate soon had City reeling as they made mistake after mistake.

Philippa Holden and Rhiannon Cowan both went close on several occasions but somehow the scoreline remained goalless at the break, giving the home side a chance to regroup.

And that is exactly what they did as they began to mount huge pressure on the back three of Tighe, Acutt and Samantha Johnson in the early stages of the second half, which saw keeper Adams take centre stage with a flurry of fine stops.

Then, in a slight case of déjà-vu, she produced a stunning penalty save, just as she did in the league victory over Plymouth the previous weekend, to the disbelief of everyone watching.

The decision that led to the spot-kick was hotly disputed and in Weymouth’s minds justice had been done as the game continued to remain finely balanced.

In fact, the save seemed to give the visitors a new lease of life and after Holden and Cowan had gone close, Weymouth fin- ally got the winner in extra- time, and it came about in the most bizarre of circumstances.

A slick move eventually saw the ball arrive at the feet of Holden and when she looped a shot over the home keeper on the swivel it sent the away side into a wild frenzy.

However, despite the Chelsea star’s effort having clearly crossed the line, the stopper then quickly threw the ball back into play, causing the referee to amazingly wave play on.

With half the Weymouth side on top of Holden, City immediately tried to take advantage by breaking down the right. But when one of their players lost possession, Saunders left fly in anger from 30 yards and found the top of the net to start the celebrations all over again.

Only the FA Cup could through up such drama and for the Weymouth it has landed them a trip to Andover New Street in the next round.
