OKEFORD UNITED 1

Upwey & BROADWEY 2

HENRY Clark came off the bench and inspired ten-man Upwey to a second successive victory in the Dorset Senior League at the Recreation Ground.

All appeared lost for the Weymouth outfit following Phil Anderson’s dismissal and Oke-ford’s late opener but substitute Clark then levelled before Charlie Kenderdine completed the comeback by grabbing the winner from the spot in added-time.

However, that only tells half the story according to Upwey boss Steve Reynolds, who was left bewildered by a couple of key decisions from the man in the middle.

He said: “The game had all sorts. It was physical and skilful, and some of the refereeing was abysmal.

“The first half was fairly even with neither keeper having too much to do so at half-time we knew if we stepped it up a gear we would have a great chance of going on and winning it.

“Things had started to get a bit more physical just before the break but the referee did not stamp on it and just five minutes into the second half we lost Ty Young to a knee injury following a horrible tackle.

“It looks like he is now going to be out for a while and to make matters worse the referee gave them the free-kick.

“It was a disgusting decision and it also meant we had to reorganise and bring Sam Purnell on and go with just Pete Bochonko up top on his own.

“Phil then received a yellow card for clearly winning the ball in a strong challenge before being shown a second one just five minutes later when he won another 50-50 where their lad was clearly late him on.

“I don’t think I have ever seen such a stupid sending off in all my life and to make matters worse they then went and took the lead.

“To our credit though, the lads kept their composure and continued to let their football do the talking, only to then see Pete stopped in his tracks by another bad decision.

“He was running through shoulder to shoulder with one of their centre-halves and when he managed to find half a yard to get his shot away the referee stopped play and said he had pulled their lad back.

“At that point I thought it was never going to be our day but thankfully Pete then set up Henry to coolly slip the ball home to make it 1-1 with just a few minutes remaining.

“That immediately gave us a huge lift and then in the second minute of added-time Sam Nichols got pulled back and tripped in the box allowing Charlie to slot away the winner from the spot.

“The character we showed was fantastic but because of the referee I have now lost two players in Ty and Phil, which is difficult to swallow.”

Commenting on individual performances, Reynolds went on to add: “Sam is running full-backs ragged at the moment and I also thought Pete was awesome up front.

“Considering what went on in the game and the fact we were without both Jason Pearce and Ethan Devaney, this really was a superb effort.”
