BRIDPORT set up a date with Toolstation Western Premier Division rivals Sherborne Town in the next round of the Dorset Senior Cup after last night overcoming lower-league Shaftesbury.
The visitors may be struggling in the Magna Dorset Premier League – two tiers below the Bees – but they raised their game at St Mary’s Field and the hosts had to wait until the final 10 minutes to wrap up victory.
Bridport opened the scoring inside 15 minutes after good work from Russell Legg and Robin Jones resulted in the latter firing home.
Shaftesbury held out for the rest of the first half, and the majority of the second, before substitute Adam Steele teed up Dan Wise for the home side’s second.
A visiting player was then sent off for deliberate handball in the box and Wise dispatched the resulting spot-kick, before Sam Charles rounded the keeper to complete the scoring.
Boss Trevor Senior, whose side host Barnstaple this Sat-urday, said: “It’s always tricky against a side like that and fair play to them as they put themselves about and worked hard.”
Bees: Cleal, Symes, J Charles, Lock, Senior, Evans, Jones (Cummings 65), Wise, S Charles, Watts (Steele 70), Legg. Sub not used: C Clarke.
