THE board of directors at Weymouth FC are in full agreement that they would help facilitate any future plans Morgan Sindall Investments and Wessex Delivery Partnership LLP have of building the club a new stadium.
George Rolls, backed by vice-chairman Mark Coleman and club secretary Nigel Biddlecombe, told a group of fans on Saturday night: “If they came to us and said we want the ground and we will build you a new one, we would do everything we could to facilitate that because at the end of the day that is what is best for the club.”
Many supporters are still bitter about the way Morgan Sindall and WDP acquired the land surrounding the Bob Lucas Stadium, which took place under the regime of controversial ex-Terras’ chairman Malcolm Curtis.
However, Rolls believes the time has come to move on. He added: “What happened in the past has happened and now we must look to the future. I have spoken to WDP but I have never spoken to Malcolm Curtis, and all I know is that it is going to be in their interests to move us, and as soon as there is anything else to report the board will let people know.
“If the club could get a new 4,000 all-seater stadium and make a bit of money out of it, which could then help it sustain a level of football it could afford then surely that would only be a good thing.
“As I understand it, certain locations are being looked at but no drawings have been done as yet.”
Going on to comment on the option agreement Morgan Sindall and WDP possess on the current stadium, Rolls said: “There is an option agreement but realistically that is not going to happen.
“Every developer puts in the small print that everything has got to be financially viable and in this current climate we are not going to get £7million.”
A site at Weymouth College has been touted as a possible destination for the new ground but Rolls claimed that as far as he was aware that is just a rumour.
He also reiterated that he would like to think he would get the money back he claims he has put into the club if any potential deal went through.
