STREET 0
BRIDPORT 2
TWO goals in three first-half minutes saw Bridport record only their second league victory of the season at the Tannery Ground on Saturday.
Chris Clarke hooked in the opener with his left foot on 39 minutes before Sam Charles added the second moments later by reacting quickest to a rebound after Chris Senior’s initial header had been saved.
Street then tried to respond in the second half but the visitors’ defence held firm to keep a morale-boosting clean sheet, which was no mean feat, particularly after conceding 21 goals in their previous six games.
Bridport boss Trevor Senior said: “It was a good win and a very good performance.
“With Tom Richardson out through injury, we played Sam Charles up top on his own with Russell Legg and Dan Wise getting forward to support and it worked really well.
“Dan had his best game of the season by a long way and was instrumental in everything we did but to be fair everyone played well in what was a great team display.
“They had two or three long-range efforts early on that Sam Filkins did well to save but we made a few chances as well with both our goals eventually coming from set- pieces.
“After the break, we then defended well and made life really difficult for Street, who struggled to break us down and never really looked like scoring.
“Roger Cummings then came on and had a couple of chances and Sam saw an effort blocked as we went on to see out the rest of the game to secure three vital points and an extremely welcome clean sheet.
“And with Radstock Town and Corsham Town also winning, it was even more significant because had we lost we would have dropped to the bottom of the table.”
Having seen his men win their last two in all competitions, Senior is hoping their fortunes in the Toolstation Western Premier are finally beginning to change.
He added: “It is only two victories but even before that we were playing well so hopefully now this is the start of a little run.
“We have got a few games at home now on the trot and it is important we make them count and start looking to climb the table.”
Bees: Filkins, Symes, C Clarke (Cummings 70), Evans, Senior, Hayter, J Charles, Wise, S Charles (Jones 85), Watts, Legg (Lock 75).
