SAM Malsom is adamant the Terras’ unbeaten run will grow if they continue to keep the ball on the deck.

The 23-year-old sensation netted five goals in two outings for Weymouth this week and is looking forward to trying to add to that tally this afternoon against Barwell at the Bob Lucas Stadium (3pm).

Malsom said: “Things are going well and I feel quite confident at the moment. I have played wide left in the last two games, which I prefer, and the fact I have managed to score a few goals from that position is really pleasing.

“I can also play up front but I find I get more freedom and space out wide and I have always felt my biggest attribute is having the ball at my feet and running at people.

“The fact I managed to score a hat-trick and, more importantly, helped the team win at Taunton last Monday in such a big game for the club financially was just fantastic, and hopefully now we can kick on from that.

“I am certainly enjoying it here.

“The first few games were a little frustrating because I was playing up front and we were hitting a lot of long balls, which made it a struggle for me to get involved.

“However, now I am out wide and we are playing it along the floor it is enabling me to get on the ball more. “We just need to transfer that way of playing into our home games now and after going three games unbeaten there is no reason why we should not be able to do that.

“There is no doubt that the players here are good enough to play that way, it is just about having the confidence to do it in front of our own fans and hopefully that will come against Barwell.”

Malsom followed up his exploits at Wordsworth Drive with two further goals in Wednesday’s 2-1 friendly win over Plymouth Argyle – the club where he began his career.

The fleet-footed forward netted 29 goals in 24 appearances for the Pilgrims’ youth team but never got a chance to break into the first team.

He then had spells in the Faroe Islands, Iceland and Sweden before returning to the UK in 2010 when he signed for Hereford United.

When asked how he ended up at Weymouth, Malsom added: “I played in a few other countries and then moved to Hereford where things did not work out how I had hoped.

“I got an injury early on during my time there and after that I never really got an opportunity in the first team.

“There was a lot of pressure there at the time as the club was in a relegation battle and the manager did not give me much of a chance, which was a bit frustrating.

“After going out on loan and eventually leaving there, Truro City then offered me a contract but they had a bit of a problem with transfers and could not sign anyone.

“It was then that I got a call from a friend of mine, Ben Gerring, who told me to come up to Weymouth for training, and now I just want to play as many games and score as many goals as possible.

“I also want to settle at a club and make progress as well.

“My ultimate aim is to try and get back into the professional game and hopefully if I can keep scoring and putting in good performances for Weymouth, I can achieve just that.”
