THE second week of the winter season saw a mixed bag of results for WeySports Netball Club.
Moby Dick’s A earned their first victory of the campaign against Mane Road but the B team fell to a second straight defeat.
The A team started strongly and some brilliant passing from centre Kerri Watters and wing-attack Darcy Belle enabled goal-shooter Cristal Butcher to open up an early lead.
As the match moved into the second quarter the tension between the two teams rose, but Moby’s continued to hold the advantage.
Moby’s switched to a defensive pairing of Belle and Fran Gurracci and the duo dominated the shooting circle to keep the Mane Road shooters at bay, while Ele Johnstone made several timely interceptions.
During the final quarter, Moby Dick’s controlled the court, continuing to press forward.
And in-form shooter Butcher rarely missed a goal-scoring opportunity, ensuring Moby’s ran out 40-32 winners, and also securing her the player of the match accolade.
Moby Dick’s B on the other hand, went down at the hands of a much improved Bennetts side.
Injuries to Jo Seeney and Hennie Helliwell, meant Tasha Lund started at centre with Jen Roberts at wing-attack and Leah Moody as wing-defence.
The game began brightly for Moby’s with Lund and Roberts passing the ball well down the court.
But it was Bennetts who took a slight lead at the end of the first period.
Defensive duo Frankie Glynn and Becky Vincent worked tirelessly, while at the other end Katharine De Kretser and Lin Crocker kept Moby’s in with a shout.
An injury to Roberts saw coach Juliette Frampton enter the fray.
And although Moby’s continued to battle hard, they were unable to secure their first points of the season.
Player of the match was awarded to Glynn for her superb performance in the shooting circle.
* WeySports have secured funding for their pre-season fitness equipment. The financial backing has been provided by Sam Roper, who owns DY Catering.
Social secretary Devon Welch, who helped acquire the support, expressed her gratitude.
She said: “I am pleased that we were able to buy the equipment.
“We are hopefully going to carry on with extra fitness training to ensure we have the best chance of winning the league. Many thanks to Sam for his support.”
* Coach Frampton resumed her Net4all scheme last Tuesday evening.
The session runs from 7-8pm at Budmouth and places are still available.
