AFTER watching Gary Bowles receive his fourth red card in less than a year, boss Ashley Vickers urged the county town defender to improve his disciplinary record or risk ruining his burgeoning career.
The 22-year-old, who signed for AFC Bournemouth last month before being loaned back to the Magpies, was dismissed after just 29 minutes of Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Basingstoke following an off-the-ball incident.
And having already seen Bowles miss the opening five games of the season through suspension, Vickers insists the former Yeovil man must work on his temperament.
He said: “It was a needless sending off. The ball was on the other side of the stand and you just can’t react to any comment.
“Their guy has gone down like he’s been shot and referees at this level want to make a statement. You can’t give them the opportunity to do that.
“I know Gary feels aggrieved but it’s something he needs to address, otherwise it will damage his career.
“He has a massive opportunity at Bournemouth and he needs to give himself the best opportunity of fulfilling his potential.
“I’m not hanging him out to dry, it’s something he needs to take on board and I’m sure he will.”
Meanwhile, skipper Mark Jermyn has been ruled out of action for six weeks.
Vickers, whose side host Weston-super-Mare tomorrow night, added: “He has strained a medial knee ligament.”

Antony Carlile bagged a brace with Calvin Brooks and Steve Walker also scoring for the visitors.
