WEYSPORTS had a disappointing start to their winter season, with both teams suffering defeats.
Moby Dick’s A had a tough opening fixture against relegated Boho B.
Right from the starting whistle the game was played at a fast pace, with Boho B taking an early lead.
The youngsters battled hard up and down the court, with goalkeeper Fran Guracci making key interceptions.
Precise shooting from goal-shooter Cristal Butcher allowed Moby’s to edge back into the game.
Boho continued to dominate the court play, with Moby Dick’s unable to match them.
However, in the third quarter the game swayed in Moby’s favour and they reaped the benefits, scoring goals in quick succession.
Despite their valiant efforts, Moby Dick’s A could not secure their first victory of the season, losing 41-22 to an experienced Boho.
The player of the match was awarded to wing-attack/goal-attack Kenna Nurse, for her superb court play and brilliant shooting.
New outfit Moby Dick’s B also faced difficult opposition for their first game of the winter season – Toymaster.
The match started evenly with the ball rarely making it into the shooting circle.
However, the experience of Toymaster shone through as they began to score goals.
Hennie Helliwell took to the court as wing-attack in the second period, making an instant impression, allowing Moby’s to notch up goals on the scoreboard.
The Moby’s defence fought tirelessly to intercept passes, and bring the ball down to the shooting partnership.
Moby’s continued to pass the ball well, but shots could not be converted into goals.
Toymaster took advantage of this and added to their lead.
An injury to centre Jo Seeney in the last quarter forced the team to make changes – but these changes were not enough to stop Moby Dick’s from losing their first game of the season.
Player of the match was given to Seeney for her excellent interceptions and brilliant passing.
Coach Juliette Frampton was able to find some positives from the matches.
She said: “Both teams had difficult opening games, but every player gave me 100 per cent and that is all I can ask for.
“The B team played extremely good netball during some parts of the game, and the defence worked well together.
“It was their first competitive match as a team and it was always going to be tough.
“I was also pleased with the A team. The defence worked extremely well, even with the new formation.
“They seemed to let nerves get the better of them, but that will vanish as they become more experienced. Hopefully both teams will be able to get all five points this week.”
Moby Dick’s A take on Mane Road and Moby Dick’s B face Bennetts tomorrow.
