DORCHESTER won the County Cup after beating Broadstone at Wimborne.
The county town rink of Gary Mumford, Dave Glanville, George Spracklen and Wayne Garnett had a convincing win over Wilf Scott, Ashley Leaper, Clive Smith and Mike Abraham.
Although Garnett’s quartet was 6-5 down after seven ends, they picked up a six to go 11-6 ahead.
After dropping two singles, they then picked up another six to go 17-8 ahead and never looked back, winning 26-12.
John Lawlor, Barry Day, Pete Clarke and Eddy Young of Dorchester had a closer game against Josh Perren, Alister Swadel, Harry Hinton and Roy Lench.
After racing into a 14-0 lead after seven ends, the Dorchester rink failed to score on the next six ends and Wessex pulled back to only one shot behind.
The game swung to and fro but Young’s rink held firm and won 21-19.
The Dorchester four of Peter Stevenson, Dave Joslin, Stevie Huttley and Nick Voss enjoyed a comfortable success over Mike Caines, Bob Steffe, Bob Sibley and Chris Howard and were 7-0 up after four ends.
The Wessex rink closed the gap to 8-7 after nine and the game was fairly close after 13 but then Dorchester picked up a five and continued to score regularly, running out winners 22-13.
The only losing Dorchester rink was Robbie Ward, Terry Greenman, Ged Costello and Steve Gait who came up against Don Yea, Dave Gibb, Dave Edwards and Trevor Smyth.
After six ends, the Dorchester quartet were 11-0 down but rallied to 14-6 after nine ends but then dropped shots and were 24-7 down after 16.
With the overall score getting tighter, Gait’s rink rallied to score eight shots over the final ends, eventually losing 25-15 when Wessex conceded with one end to play.
Picking up the cup, Gary Mumford, captain of Dorchester, said that he was extremely proud of all of his team including Martin Pavey and Colin Ackerman who also played their part in getting the team to the final.
