BRENDON King is adamant that Saturday’s scoreline at the Meadow did not reflect the game.
The Weymouth boss watched his men go in front and create some fantastic chances against Chesham United but it was still not enough to fend off a third defeat in four games.
King told Echosport: “It was not a 4-1 game and we did not deserve that for love nor money.
“We went ahead and had a great opportunity to go two up before they then levelled following a great passage of play.
“We then conceded another goal two minutes before the break but at the start of the second half we switched to playing two up front and performed really well.
“Unfortunately though, we failed to convert some good openings and in the end we had no other choice but to throw caution to the wind in a bid to try and find an equaliser.
“However, it did not come off and they ended up scoring twice in the final nine minutes.
“It could have been 6-6 in the end and once again it was very frustrating but football is like that sometimes and it is important we try and take the positives from it.
“It is a fine line between winning and losing, and we are not far away from turning the corner.
“People will see 4-1 and think we got turned over easily but it was nowhere near that.
“It is just a question of tightening up at the back and taking our chances, and hopefully we can do that tomorrow night at Cirencester Town, which is now a massive game for us.”
King made five changes to his starting XI with Tom Manley, Tim Stephenson, Scott Dixon, Ryan McKechnie and new-signing Sam Molsom replacing Nick Jordan, Sam Poole, Byron Napper, Matt Groves and the recently released Lewis Tasker.
Poole missed out due to a one-game suspension while Jordan was dropped due to disciplinary reasons amid reports linking him with a possible move to local rivals Dorchester Town. Napper was sidelined through injury.
King added: “I spoke to Nick and he understands why I made the decision to drop him and was very professional about it. There is nothing more I can say on his situation at the present time.”
The ex-Crawley Town stopper began on the bench alongside Groves, Mitch Conning, Kyle Bassett and another new acquisition, Ryan Murray.
Having lost just one of their last 23 league games at home, Chesham were clear favourites ahead of kick-off but they were soon on the backfoot when Stephenson got on the end of a corner from Stephen Reed to head the Terras in front on seven minutes.
Warren Byerley was then denied a second by a fine save before Richard Marshallsay had an effort disallowed for a push.
Despite those attempts, Chesham were still enjoying a lot of possession and on 29 minutes they levelled when an incisive move that ended with Brad Wadkins firing under Manley.
United then went on to enjoy a good period of pressure, eventually taking the lead two minutes before the break thanks to a clinical finish from Simon Thomas, following a fine pull back from the right byline.
To their credit, Weymouth responded immediately and went close to finding an instant leveller when superb work from Molsom laid on a chance for Byerley, only for the ball to take a wicked bobble when he was just setting himself to strike it.
The Terras then continued to mount pressure early in the second half with Ben Gerring and Mark Peters both going close with headers from corners and Molsom seeing an effort tipped over the bar.
With time ebbing away, King then made three substitutions in the space of eight minutes in a bid to try and get something from the game but the gamble failed to pay off.
First, Thomas grabbed his second to make it 3-1 and then Danny Talbot completed the victory with a rebound after an unfortunate slip by Gerring had left Manley completely exposed.
Terras: Manley, Tribe (Murray 80), Dixon, Peters (Conning 80), Gerring, Stephenson, Marshallsay, McKechnie (Bassett 72), Malsom, Byerley, Reed. Subs not used: Jordan, Groves.
Bookings: Weymouth – none
Attendance: 313
