WEYMOUTH have pulled off a stunning swoop ahead of this afternoon’s tough clash at Chesham United with the capture of ex-Hereford United forward Sam Malsom.

The 23-year-old, who has Europa League experience, agreed non-contract terms after training with the Terras on Thursday night and boss Brendon King is over the moon with the addition.

He told Echosport: “Truro City were looking at Sam but he trained with us on Thursday night and I am delighted to say he has signed.

“He looked very sharp in training and has decent pace so I am very excited by him and as long as all the paperwork goes through in time he will go straight into the squad for Chesham.

“We have done everything our end but the Southern League need confirmation of his international clearance from the FA.”

Malsom began his career at Torquay United before sealing a move to Plymouth Argyle where he set a youth-team scoring record of 29 goals in 24 matches.

Despite that he never made a first-team appearance for the Pilgrims but did spend a short spell on loan at Tiverton Town where he scored twice in four games before being rel-eased.

His next stop was then B36 Tórshavn in the Faroe Islands where he played twice in the Europa League against Danish giants Brøndby IF and Georgian outfit FC Olimpi Rustavi, who are now known as FC Metalurgi Rustavi.

And it was those two performances, along with 19 goals in 35 games, which eventually saw Malsom attract the interest of Icelandic side Knattspyrnufélag-iþð þróttur.

Unfortunately, relegation in his first season at þróttur saw him switch clubs again with a brief stop at Irish outfit Dundalk being followed by a spell in Sweden with Motala AIF where he netted six goals in 15 outings playing on either wing.

Hereford then came in for his services in 2010 but he was unable to establish himself as a first-team regular and was shipped out on loan to Redditch United and Gloucester City before eventually being released at the end of last season.

King added: “For a player that is still only 23, he has gained a lot of experience and hopefully he can give us another dimension.

“He can play up front or out wide and he clearly has an eye for goal as well, so he promises to be a very good addition.”

The Terras have also signed Ryan Murray from Wimborne Town on non-contract terms.

King said: “Ryan was going to come pre-season.

“He spent a bit of time at Bashley last season and then decided to go to Wimborne.

“However, things did not work out there so he called me up and we’ll just see how he goes.

“He has a bit of energy and pace about him, and he goes straight into the squad today.”

Chesham have won three out of three at the Meadow this season, continuing the incredible home form they enjoyed last season where they won 14 and drew five of their 20 league encounters.

The Terras will be without suspended defender Sam Poole for the clash and there are also doubts surrounding the fitness of midfielder Byron Napper.

King, whose side lie fourth-bottom in the Evo-Stik South-ern Premier, said: “Byron is struggling. He picked up a grass burn against Evesham and it has since become infected. He is currently on antibiotics and we shall just have to see how it is but it does look quite nasty.”

Tom Manley may also be installed between the posts with Nick Jordan’s future at the club in doubt due to disciplinary reasons.
