TUATARA Bar’s title ambitions in the Weymouth Sunday League Premiership will receive a huge early test with games against two sides that know exactly what it takes to be successful.
Last season’s Championship winners Quayside lie in wait tomorrow before an even bigger task on Sept-ember 18 will see the T-Bar meet reigning top-flight champions Rendez-vous.
With another of the division’s heavyweights, Rodwell, lined up as their third fixture of the campaign, joint-managers Chris Meadows and Charlie Kenderdine both know their side can ill-afford another slow start to the season, which cost them dear in 2010/11.
T-Bar will be without some key personnel for their clash against Quayside with influential defender Phil Anderson missing through suspension, Danny Dancer, Michael Upton and Andy Graham all unavailable, and John Lamb a major injury doubt.
Despite that list of absentees Meadows and Kenderdine remain confident the depth of their squad can see them through in the opener as they begin their quest to improve on last season’s third-placed finish.
Meadows said: “It is as tough a league as it has ever been and I am sure there are at least five managers who would fancy their team’s chances of taking the title.
“We certainly come in to that bracket and we think our squad and spirit should give us a real fighting chance.
“Quayside are a formidable prospect but hopefully we have the players to do the job.”
The Quay lost 6-1 against the Vous in the Charity Shield last weekend and will no doubt be looking to bounce back.
Meanwhile, Championship side Galaxy Lions will take on Broad-mayne in their first-ever game on their own ground at Watery Lane on Portland.
Lions’ manager Dave Price said: “We have had a great pre-season and are well prepared for the game tomorrow.
“We have boosted the squad with some quality additions and managed to retain most of the side from last season so the future bodes well.”
TOMORROW’S FIXTURES Premiership: SAS v Rendezvous (3G Redlands), Tuatara v Quayside (Budmouth), Alexandra v Britannia (Budmouth), Weyline v Duke of Albany (Marsh).
Championship: Bar 314 v Belvedere (Redlands), Rock v Clipper (Redlands), Old Castle v Dolphin (Redlands), Wellworthy v Medics Away, Galaxy Lions v Broadmayne (Watery Lane), Moby Dick’s v Market House (Redlands).
