JON Bevan is aiming to make a piece of golfing history this year as he prepares for the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship, which starts today at the world-famous Belfry venue.
The Wessex Golf Centre ace has two targets – the first is to win at the Midlands venue, and the second is to qualify for his third successive PGA Cup and help Great Britain & Ireland take on the United States at CordeValle in September.
Bevan was part of the GB&I team that narrowly lost in Georgia four years ago and admits he has “unfinished business” as he prepares to tee off at the £78,000 Peugeot-supported event which is being staged over The Belfry’s PGA National course until Friday.
Bevan though, has had to overcome health problems after being diagnosed with kidney stones.
He said: “It was one of the most painful things I’ve ever had but I’m on course for The Belfry and want to add a PGA national title to my CV while I can.
“But I’ve probably only played maybe eight or nine rounds of golf this year.
“I’m getting my course craft back though and I want to be in the mix for the championship as well as PGA Cup places.”
Bevan also hopes to qualify for The Open but admits that a PGA Cup place is special.
“Once you’ve tasted that sort of competition, you want more,” he added.
“I personally feel I have unfinished business from the last time it was held in the States.
“So to go over there and be the first Great Britain & Ireland team to win on American soil would be fantastic. You don’t often get the chance to create a piece of history in golf.
“But qualifying for the PGA Cup is one thing, losing is another because that’s not a party you want to be at.
“I think I have maybe another two years to be able to challenge at this level so I intend to go for it.
“I took some inspiration from watching my pal Jason Levermore make the cut at Wentworth and then record one under par in the final round.”
Other competitors from the West Region include former champion James Lee (Caerphilly), PGA Cup player And-rew Barnett (North Wales Golf Range), and Bevan’s club-mate Michael Watson, who was second at this year’s Celtic Manor qualifier.
Bevan already has one title under his belt after helping England to the PGA of Europe International Team Championship in December.
