NATHAN Walker has pledged his future to Dorchester Town, according to boss Ashley Vickers – rejecting overtures from rivals Weymouth in the process.
The Terras held talks with the 24-year-old on Wednesday evening, offering him the chance to become skipper at the Bob Lucas Stadium.
However, the towering defender has since met with Vickers and sworn his allegiance to the county town side.
A delighted Vickers told Echosport: “We’re really pleased to keep him on board. He shook hands on a deal and if he is a man of his word then it’s a done deal.
“Our secretary David Martin is away so Nathan will sign his contract next week. He is happy with the offer, he just wanted some assurances which we were able to give him.
“I also told him that Garry Hill used to say I was his talisman as he took me everywhere, and Nathan is of the same ilk.
“Sometimes a big tackle or a big header can change a game, so he is a talismanic figure in that sense.
“He may not be our captain but he is a leader on the pitch. He is fearless and brave and plays to his strengths.
“He’s had a good year for us in which he really stepped up. Let’s hope he can go on to the next level.”
Despite retaining the former Weymouth man’s services, Dorchester could be set to make a move for Bath City’s Danny Webb.
Asked about the striker-turned-defender, Vickers said: “I have known him for a long time and he is a proven Conference National player.
“If we could get him on board it would be one heck of a signing.”
* The Magpies will host Yeovil Town in a pre-season friendly on July 6.
