SEAN Walbridge believes the three-day clash with Devon is the “perfect opportunity” for his side to make amends for their disappointing MCCA Knockout Trophy campaign.

Dorset lost three out of their four games in the one-day competition, causing them to finish bottom of group three. But their determined boss is adamant they can bounce back with success in their Minor Counties Western Division opener at Dean Park, which starts tomorrow (11am).

Walbridge, whose side were crowned Minor Counties champions last year, said: “We did not play consistently well enough in the one-day games but this match gives us the perfect opportunity to put things right.

“No one has ever retained the Minor Counties title since it reverted to a three-day format and although it is going to be difficult that is our aim.

“It is a challenge everyone at the club is up for and we could not have asked for a much tougher start against Devon, who are currently unbeaten in the one-day game.

“However, we’re at home and we need to make that count to ensure we hit the ground running.”

With James Park, Chris Jones and Simon Watkins all unavailable for the clash, the experienced duo of Darren Cowley and Glyn Treagus have both been drafted back into the side after being left out of the last two games. Spin-king Jack Leach also returns.

Walbridge added: “With the competition we have in the squad it makes selection very difficult and it is vital players take their chances when they come along.

“A competitive squad is something we have been working on for three or four years now and hopefully it will help us continue to build on the success of last year.
