DEFEAT in the final saw Terry Oldrid and Jules Stout lose their unbeaten record in this year’s Weymouth League.
The loss throws the A series wide open but the duo’s downfall was certainly no disgrace as it came against 2010 Weymouth RAF Careers Beach Classic Player of the Tournament Rob Flay and veteran Stuart Jeanes, who were both visiting the area.
The final was an epic match with both sides going point to point.
The first set saw Flay and Jeanes eventually take the decisive point to win 19-18 and their extra experience also shone through in the second.
Oldrid and Stout fought hard and never took a backwards step but in the end they fell to a 17-15 defeat, handing Flay and Jeanes the weekly title.
Prior to that, there was also plenty of excitement in the semi-finals where another tantalising clash saw Under-18 British Champion Ryan Stout come up against his father Jules Stout.
Playing in his first event of the season, Ryan Stout certainly put up a good fight by showing endless energy around the court but eventually his pairing lost out 17-10.
In the B series, Yeovil’s Roger Barnett and David James took the honours against Paul Hurrell and Costa Constantine.
The Somerset duo proved unstoppable winning through 15-7.
Just like the top-flight, the semi-finals also saw some fantastic confrontations with 16-year-olds Lewis Edwards and Matt Cafer both showing their tremendous potential for the future.
The competition continues next Tuesday evening and new players of all abilities are always welcome.
Registration will take place between 6pm and 6.30pm on the stretch of beach opposite Alexandra Gardens.
