TWENTY-SEVEN Cricket teams took part in three Kwik Cricket competitions at the Redlands Community Sports Hub.

The majority of the primary schools in Weymouth and Portland were represented with 63 matches taking place overall under the guidance of students from Wey Valley School and Sports College and Weymouth College, who took up the umpiring duties.

Tim Hill, chairman of the Dorset Schools Cricket Association, commented on the superb fielding and catching in the games when presenting certificates to all competitors, while Sean Fitzgerald, the head coach of West Dorset, presented shields, donated by the West Dorset Cricket Association, to the winning teams.

Eleven teams took part in the Year Six mixed competition. The final play-off games between Southwell, Southill and Wyke Regis, resulted in Wyke Regis winning through to the county final.

The Year Six girls’ tournament was equally as enthralling with Wyke Regis again running out the winners ahead of Conifers, who will also progress through to the county spectacle.

Many thanks go to Hugh Shackell, the Dorset Girls’ County coach, for managing the girls and Year Five competitions.

Holy Trinity and Southwell go through to the Year Five county final having triumphed in a 10-team competition. Congratulations to all those teams who represent the West Dorset School Sport Partnership at the county finals, which take place at Bryanston in June and early July.

Gill Jones, Dorset Cricket Board competitions and match manager, said: “What a fantastic day it was to see 11 schools, 27 teams and around 250 children taking part in the cricket competition which is sponsored nationally by Asda.” The event was supported by Asda, Weymouth, who provided the children with snacks and drinks throughout the day.
