MIKE Fowler has described the vacant manager’s role at Weymouth “too good an opportunity to miss”.

The 29-year-old is due to meet with the Terras’ board tomorrow to discuss the position despite having received offers to return to full-time football in the Blue Square Bet Premier.

Fowler helped guide Weymouth to survival in the Zamaretto Premier Division as captain at the tail end of last season and he now wants to lead the club back towards the upper echelons of the non-League pyramid.

The Welshman told Echosport: “I have had a discussion with George Rolls and I will be going down to Weymouth to meet the directors tomorrow for further talks.

“I really enjoyed playing for the club during the last couple of months of last season and it was great to be a part of keeping them up.

“I know how big the club is, having played against them in the Conference, and the opportunity of taking on the manager’s job there has certainly enticed me.

“I have got my own coaching academy in South Wales and it is something I want to move into full-time.

“Previously, Martyn Rogers had talked about bringing me in as a player-coach, which was something that really excited me as I have known him for years.

“He did a great job last season to keep the club up so when I found out a couple of weeks ago that he had left it was disappointing to hear.

“However, that is just football sometimes. People come and go but the clubs themselves always remain and I am looking forward to sitting down and seeing what the board has to say.

“I have had a couple of offers to return to full-time football in the Blue Square Bet Premier but I am approaching 30 now and taking over at a club like Weymouth would be a great challenge.

“I have a lot of contacts in non-League circles and around the Bristol area, and I also know the Zamaretto Premier Division very well having played in it with not only Weymouth but Merthyr as well.

“There is great potential at Weymouth and if I could put a winning team together I know I could push crowds of 500-600 closer towards the 1,000 mark, which would be incredible.”

When asked whether he would move the club’s training base out of Dorset and closer to Bristol, Fowler went on to add: “I have got a structure in mind to put into place but it would not be fair for me to divulge that information when I have not got the job.

“That is something that will be discussed further in my interview with the board tomorrow and as I understand it they will then make their decision pretty soon after that.

“Brendon King is in for it as well and he is a great guy and Weymouth through and through, so whatever happens I have no doubts the club will be in safe hands.”

Ex-Salisbury City boss Tommy Widdrington is also believed to be in the running for the post, along with Rogers, who has been linked with a dramatic U-turn.
