BRENDON King is adamant he is ready to step into the hot-seat at Weymouth FC.

The former reserve-team boss, who became Martyn Rogers’ assistant in January, was interviewed for the vacant post yesterday afternoon but faces stiff competition from a host of other applicants.

It is understood the likes of Chris Vinnicombe (ex-Tiverton Town boss), Kim Grant (ex-Woking boss) and Brian O’Donnell (ex-Dorchester Town caretaker manager) have also thrown their hats in the ring, along with Mike Fowler, who finished the season as the Terras’ captain.

King said: “It would obviously be a big step for me but it is what I have been working towards for the last few years and I believe I am ready for it.

“I have cut my teeth in local football and been successful, and had half a season as Martyn’s number two, and I believe I can help deliver the stability the club needs.”

Commenting on his interview with George Rolls and associate director Mark Coleman, King added: “It went well. Both sides set out what we would expect from each other and now we have gone away to think things through further before talking again today.”

Meanwhile, Rolls has told Echosport that the board hopes to have someone in place in the next 10 days.

He said: “The board has got to do the right thing and talk to everybody who applies and Mark has invited me to attend some of the interviews.

“Ultimately though, Mark is the only board member at the ground every day and he will be the one that has the final say.

“We want to have someone in place in the next 10 days in order to give them enough time to start building a squad ahead of the new campaign.

“And I am glad to say, out of the players we have spoken to that finished the season with us, none of them have intimated their future lies elsewhere but of course the new manager and the budget will dictate who stays and who goes.”

James Nortei, Lewis Tasker, Matt Groves and Rob Wolleaston are among those that want to remain at the club.

The board is also hoping to get star striker Warren Byerley to put pen to paper later this week.
