IAN Ferguson is calling out to local businesses to get behind Weymouth FC ahead of the 2011/12 campaign.
The Weyline Taxis owner, whose consortium recently tried to acquire the club, has agreed a new sponsorship package with the Terras but will no longer have his company’s name emblazoned over the home shirt.
Ferguson has released the following statement: “Weyline are very pleased to be able to continue as a major sponsor of Weymouth FC.
“However, we are not continuing to sponsor the home shirt as we feel that this should be made available so that other companies have the opportunity to take advantage of this item which gives fantastic exposure to any sponsor. We will continue to support the club with the Weyline Stand and Weyline Lounge. “This is a critical time and more sponsors need to be found to ensure the financial viability of the club for the future.
“Yes, there have been some political issues around the club and I have been involved in a consortium, which was keen to acquire the club.
“But even though we were unsuccessful the club still needs our support and the support of the town, so we will be working with the club’s board and promoting the club to other companies to ensure that the 2011/12 season is a winner on and off the pitch.
“Weymouth Football Club has been in existence for almost 121 years because the supporters, residents and businesses of Weymouth and Portland have made it happen with their support and efforts. We can continue that tradition if we have the collective will.”
Meanwhile, fellow club sponsor Joe Djeebet of WindowMan is to head up a new commercial team at the Terras.
The long-time fan has agreed to take on the role on a voluntary basis and will work alongside Fred Dunford to help promote the club both locally and nationally.
