WEYMOUTH Amateur Boxing Club is on the hunt for a new home.

Parking poses a major problem at the club’s current residence on Hardwick Street, and with membership continually on the up, a larger abode is subsequently required.

Weymouth ABC first moved to Hardwick Street in 1951 after the persistent efforts of Dai and Beattie Nelmes, and Wally and Ethel Schonfield, secured the backing of 11 local businessmen in order to purchase the premises outright.

But 60 years on, president David Nelmes, son of Dai and Beattie, is keen to see the club continue its progression.

He said: “We are looking for any land out there, or premises, that we can purchase. The club is going very well and membership is on the up, but we have parking issues at Hardwick Street and we feel that now is the time to move.

“We want to increase membership even more and open up our gym even more but we need more areas to park, so we need to make the next step as a club.

“We’ve been at Hardwick Street since 1951 and as a club we have outgrown it, so we’re looking for better facilities and better parking elsewhere.”

Meanwhile, in the ring, teenager Toby Osmond narrowly missed out on a place in the final of the National Junior Championships.

Having done remarkably well to reach the semi-finals, the seasider was unfortunate to lose out in a keenly fought contest against Stevenage’s Jordan Norrington.

Nelmes added: “It was a very close contest. I had him winning by one point but the judges had him losing unfortunately.

“He definitely won the first round, the second one was even but he lost the third. It’s still a very good achievement reaching the semi-finals and it’s a great experience for him.”
