SAS are beginning to prove a force to be reckoned with after winning the Weymouth Sunday League Six-a-side Tournament at the Marsh.
The triumph wraps up an incredible campaign for Danny Sanders’ men, who also claimed promotion to the top-flight by finishing third in the Championship.
The prospect of playing Premiership football next season has clearly given the whole club a huge boost and after winning the Weymouth FC Five-a-side Tournament the previous day, SAS’ two teams were bursting with confidence ahead of the annual sixes, despite being branded huge underdogs.
Competing in a tough group that included the likes of Golden Lion, Dolphin, Old Ship, Britannia and Quayside, SAS B picked up four wins to finish top and then eased past Duke of Albany 5-2 in the last eight.
That set up an intriguing semi-final against a very strong Rodwell side, which ended 1-1 and had to be decided by a penalty shootout.
Once again though, SAS held their nerve with their keeper Guy Paddock saving the Rodwell’s first two penalties to put his side in complete command.
The Boot Hill outfit then fired their third spot-kick over the bar, sending Sanders’ team through to face Premiership champions Rendezvous for the title.
Rendezvous B were clear favourites ahead of the clash but their recent poor form in finals came back to haunt them.
Following single-goal defeats in the Dorset Sunday Intermediate Cup final and the Len Mahoney Cup final, the nightclubbers were left frustrated again as Charlie May headed in a corner from Ross Walker to hand SAS the only goal of the game.
Sanders said: “Winning the sixes is the icing on the cake of what has been a fantastic second season for the club.
“It is such a great achievement especially when you look at the names on the cup where there are very few current teams engraved on it, so I am very proud ours will be next.”
The Weymouth Sunday League will hold its annual presentation night at the pavilion tomorrow evening, from 7pm.
All teams are advised to pick up their tickets from Snookes in Weymouth prior to the event.
