ASHLEY Vickers has stressed the importance of remaining calm in the search for reinforcements.

The Magpies’ chief is on the hunt for new recruits but knows he must stay patient as potential targets weigh up their options.

The 39-year-old has already made an approach for an unnamed striker and is still to receive a definitive answer from the man in question.

Vickers is also on the lookout for a new keeper, defender and midfielder as he aims to build on this season’s 17th-place finish in Blue Square Bet South.

He told Echosport: “It’s important we do not panic. People are banding players around all the time but we do not need to move on everyone.

“Other players will be released in due course so it’s important not to get carried away just yet.

“We feel the club sells itself with the facilities on offer, as well as the spirit we have within the camp.

“People text me different names all the time but we have to ensure we make the right decisions about players.”

Two men who could interest the county town boss are former team-mate Jason Matthews and ex-Magpie Jamie Brown following their release from league rivals Eastleigh.

Vickers made an unsuccessful bid to lure gloveman Matthews last summer and, with AFC Bournemouth stopper Dan Thomas also on his radar, may think twice this time around.

Of the current squad, defensive duo Gary Bowles and Jake Smeeton penned one-year extensions over the weekend while Ryan Moss, Jamie Gleeson, Steve Devlin and Regan Coward have all been offered new deals.

Jamie Frampton is university-bound and therefore set to end his stay with the county town outfit.

However, Vickers added: “He’s a talented lad, we will keep tabs on him and there is always the chance we could get him on dual registration.”

Chris Flood meanwhile, has yet to make a decision on the offer placed in front of him.

Vickers said: “He’s on holiday for a week now and he will think about things while he’s away.

“We have tried to stress to him that if he has a good season with us he will get back into full-time football. We want to help him do that but we also want to help ourselves.”
