TEAM Dev came out on top at the second annual Peter Aiken Memorial Trophy tournament at the Avenue Stadium.
A total of 42 players descended on the county town venue with three sides – Team Dev, Team Jason and Team Trust – competing for the prize, in honour of ex-Magpies’ chairman Peter Aiken.
The winning team, managed by Dev Ward, enjoyed a 3-0 victory over the Dorchester Town Supporters Trust representatives before inflicting a 6-0 defeat on Jason Aplin’s charges to claim the trophy.
The closest contest of the day saw the latter secure second place with a narrow 3-2 win over the Trust, bossed by Dan Fuge.
However, the Trust gained some consolation in the form of the goal of the day – youngster Tom Berry’s sublime lobbed finish rounding off some fine build-up play.
Funds raised from the tournament will be donated to Dorchester Cricket Club in memory of Magpies’ fan and Trust volunteer Nathan Cross, who tragically passed away earlier this year aged just 16, and to the Supporters Trust.
The money will be used to improve the current net facilities at the Rec, where fittingly more than 400 people attended a memorial evening for Nathan on the weekend following his death.
Nathan’s sister Becky Cross said: “As a family we wanted the money raised from the tournament to go back into benefiting the development of sport in Dorchester and thought that the Cricket club would be perfect.
“We are grateful and overwhelmed by the continuing support that is being shown in the community in memory of Nathan.”
Trust communications officer Fuge added: “Following on from last year’s tournament, the day was another success and the feedback I have received since suggests that everyone enjoyed the day. We spoke in the Trust dressing room before our first game about why we were all taking part, and primarily that was to remember some special people in Nathan and Peter who have directly played a part in the lives of everyone who played in the Trust Team and the overwhelming majority of all the people who took part in the tournament.
“In addition we have also raised money for some great causes along the way.
“We may look at tweaking the format slightly for next year in order to include as many Dorchester Town supporters as we possibly can, as ultimately they are the people who we want to be out there taking part.
“I would like to thank David Martin for arranging for us to use the pitch and facilities, and also club kitman Derek Taylor for allowing us to use three sets of kit for the day.”
The Trust is always looking to recruit new members.
An annual membership costs £10 for adults, £5 for concessions (OAPs and students), £15 for a family membership (up to two adults and two children), while membership for people aged 17 and under is free.
Corporate membership is also available at a cost of £75. For more information, or to join, visit magpiestrust.co.uk
