WEYMOUTH HUSKIES 25 EXETER UNIVERSITY 94

A DEVASTATING first-half display condemned the Weymouth Huskies to a heavy defeat in their first home match of the season.

The Exeter University Eagles put the hosts under immediate pressure, administering a full-court press.

This proved tough for the Huskies to adjust to and although they made some decent moves towards the net, they could not convert, with only six points in the half coming from Nicole Cornish (4) and Rosie Moore (2).

The University onslaught continued in the second half, forcing the Huskies into mistakes while putting points on the board at the offensive end.

This resulted in 11 unanswered points and a comfortable lead for the visitors.

It was at this point the Huskies changed their defensive tactics, which slowed Exeter down and gave the hosts more time at the offensive end.

Exeter also made a change to their defence but the move appeared to suit the Huskies as they found their scoring touch.

Jayne Guppy, Ellen Blackwood, Carly Dean, Nicole Cornish and Reme Nurse all chipped in but the damage had already been done and Exeter ran out comfortable winners, 94-25.

Coach Che Osborne said: “I think we went into this game expecting to lose which always makes games more difficult, but credit to the girls as they never gave up, even when they were 50 points down.

“I think this game also gave us a good chance to see where we need to be and what sort of things we need to work on for the future.”
