WITH little more than a week left of his loan spell at Wimborne Town, Matt Groves insists he will do everything possible to force his way back into the Dorchester Town line-up.
The striker has been with the Zamaretto Division One S&W outfit for almost three months, scoring two goals in the process, but is due to return to the Avenue Stadium in the middle of next week.
And the 30-year-old is desperate to regain a spot in the starting XI.
He said: “I’m looking forward to coming back. I have been with Wimborne full-time – both games and training – and it’s worked out okay as I only live five or 10 minutes away from their ground.
“However, it will be good to see everyone at Dorchester again and get stuck into training and see whether I can get back into the team.
“I just want to work hard and show Ashley Vickers that I can do it, then it’s up to him whether I get a chance. If I do then I will give it everything to stay in the team.
“The team, which is a little bit different to when I left, is doing really well so I know I won’t get straight back in.
“I know I’ve got to be patient but I’ve been playing regularly now and playing quite well. I’ve not scored a lot of goals but it’s not through the lack of effort.
“Football changes so quickly and someone could be doing well for a while but then it doesn’t happen for them and someone else comes on in their place and nicks a goal. Everything previous is then forgotten about.”
Groves has enjoyed his time under former county town team-mate Alex Browne and is set to feature this evening when Wimborne travel to Gosport Borough.
He added: “I was getting frustrated at not playing so I said to Ash that if I could get something sorted, would I be able to go out on loan.
“I spoke to Alex about it and everyone was quite happy for it to happen.
“I just wanted to go there and give Alex my best as he put faith in me and they were good enough to pay my wages.
“It’s been okay and the results have been a bit mixed. We’ve had some good games but we’ve also had some bad ones.
“It’s good to be playing under Alex and good to be playing games.”
Dorchester, who suffered a third straight postponement at the weekend, are due to host Poole Borough in a rearranged Dorset Senior Cup tie tomorrow night (7.45pm).
Meanwhile, the visit of Basingstoke Town has been rescheduled for Tuesday, January 25.
