MOONFLEET 94 Dorchester 69

MOONFLEET continued their march in the Egham Trophy with victory over neighbours Dorchester.

Fleet’s home rink of Margaret Hooper, Sheila Baker, Chris Cook and skip Warren Smith, up against Julie Flatters, Eve Peavoy, Rob Jennings and Edward Flatters, made a bright start and carved open a 14-6 lead after 10 ends.

They continued to hold the upper hand in the second half too, picking up a useful 28-16 victory.

The other home quartet of Carol Jackson, Thelma Nash, Pete Read and skip Mike Gale met Brain Paulson, Emma Follis, Phil Hallett and Annette Hallett.

The hosts edged the first 10 ends 10-6 and maintained their four-shot cushion at 16-12 after 17 ends.

A strong finish dashed any hopes of a county town comeback as Gale’s rink ran out 23-13 winners.

Moonfleet’s away rink of Kath Desmond, June Searle, Ron McCarthy and skip Barry Patterson played out a hard fought contest against Barbara Follis, Sue Maggs, Ged Costello and skip Martin Pavey with the Patterson quartet holding a 14-9 lead at 10 ends.

The Pavey rink closed the gap to one shot – 16-15 – by the 15th end but it was the away side who came out on top, recording a fine 21-17 win.

Fleet’s final foursome of Irene Martindill, Rose Whyte, John Crabb and skip Alf Sawkins faced another tough battle against Julie Corben, Isobel Addison, Dean Curtis and Nick Voss.

Sawkins and co shaded the first 10 ends, 10-8, and the game remained nip and tuck with the away side falling behind 17-15 after 15 ends but regaining the lead 21-20 at 18.

There was to be one final twist as the Voss rink claimed a 23-22 victory. However, it was not enough to stop Moonfleet progressing to the next round.
