STAR striker Warren Byerley has issued a rallying call to all Terras’ fans to turn out in force for his side’s next two games at the Bob Lucas Stadium.
The 25-year-old believes the fantastic support the players have been receiving in recent weeks has been a big factor in the team’s upturn in fortunes and he is desperate to see the momentum continue.
Just over a month ago, two heavy away defeats at Hednesford Town and Stourbridge caused many people to write off their hopes of survival but since then there has been an amazing turnaround.
Not only have Weymouth gone four unbeaten in the league but they have also turned in some incredible performances, and they are now targeting back-to-back home games against Banbury United (Saturday) and Evesham United (December 11) as a big opportunity to get within touching distance of the teams above them.
Byerley, whose side currently sits eight points adrift of safety, said: “If we want a chance of staying up, the next two matches are the types of games we need to look to win.
“A few of the younger lads needed picking up after the defeats at Hednesford and Stourbridge but in the last couple of weeks our performances have been really good, and at the minute there is a great buzz around the place.
“We are now unbeaten in our last four in the league and in seven in all competitions at home, and it is vitally important that we keep that momentum going.
“The fans have been like our 12th man and have really been spurring us on, and hopefully we can start attracting a few more to come along as well.
“As our recent home form has proved, the players are really responding to their support, and as the chairman has made clear, the more people that come through the gate, the more chance there is of us adding a few more to the squad, which is something we really need.
“We are a bit threadbare at the moment and if we lost a couple of key players to injuries or suspensions it would be a big worry but hopefully that won’t happen.
“The aim now has to be to get within touching distance of the teams above us and then have a real crack it at after the New Year.
“There is a lot of work to be done but as long as we keep everyone fit and start winning a few more at home, I am confident we can stay up.”
One player that Byerley would definitely like to see remain at the club is his current strike partner Matthew Wright, who is on loan from Salisbury City.
The hardworking forward added: “Matt is really beginning to perform now and the two of us are getting a bit of a partnership going.
“He has already told me that he would like to stay and I really hope that happens, as he takes the pressure off me winning every first ball, and allows me to gamble on the second instead.
“It is really going well at the moment and I always knew that if I was given games I would produce the goods. All I hope now is that I stay injury free and if I manage to do that I am confident I will stay up near the top of the goalscoring charts for the rest of the season.”
Byerley has netted 14 goals in all competitions this season, including nine in the league and nine in his last 12 appearances.
