A NAIL-BITING finale saw Brian Roberts’ trio prevail in the triples competition at the Weymouth & Portland Open Tournament.

Roberts and co were ahead after 17 ends against Martin Puckett and his team-mates but the latter held three shots on the 18th to level proceedings.

However, Roberts, with his last wood, moved the jack to give him a three-shot lead. Puckett failed to wipe out the advantage with his last throw of the dice and team Roberts booked their place in the next round.

Also in the triples, G Matthews’ contingent narrowly got the better of C Euripidol’s trio, 21-20.

Last year’s winners of the mixed pairs – June Searle and John Crabb – were sent crashing out at the first round stage, losing to Daphne Gale and Joe Wahnon.

Also making it through were Roy and Jean Burnett, who defeated StJ and Mary Corben 22-20.

The singles also saw close encounters with A Smith overcoming K Thircettle 21-20 and J Hooper getting the better of Puckett, 22-20.

Prior to the action, a minute’s silence was held at Greenhill in memory of club member Warren Norman, who sadly passed away on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Weymouth & Portland mayor Paul Kimber delivered the first bowl to officially open the annual tournament, which ends on Saturday.
