THIRTY teams braved atrocious conditions to compete at the annual Weymouth Cougars mini-soccer tournament.

The wet and windy weather failed to put a damper on the spirit of the competition as children aged seven to 10, and special guest, mayor Paul Kimber, gathered at the Marsh and put on a terrific spectacle.

The under-9s provided some outstanding performances and it was Wyke Victoria Vikings who ran out victorious, beating an excellent Poole Town Wessex in the final.

Weymouth Youth were crowned under-10 champions with Portland United finishing as runners-up.

In accordance with FA rules, trophies were unable to be presented in the under-8 section, but each participant was awarded a medal for their efforts.

A Cougars’ spokesperson said: “Once again we would like to take this opportunity to thank all the people without whose help and support this competition would not be possible.

“Our thanks also go to Weymouth & Portland Borough Council grounds staff for looking after the pitches and surrounding areas so well for us.

“A special word of thanks must go to our referees who year after year give up their weekend and without who there would be no competition.

“Finally to all the players, mums, dads and all who attended and had any input into the tournament, we thank you all.”
