Speedway fans will be the biggest winners tonight when the Weymouth Weyline Wildcats go to war with arch-rivals the Plymouth Devils at the Wessex Raceway (7.15pm), according to Phil Bartlett.

The Wildcats’ chairman believes this evening’s National League Trophy clash will be a humdinger following last night’s washout at the St Boniface Arena.

The track was unfit for racing after overnight rain and more downpours yesterday morning. With the forecast for more rain during the day the meeting was postponed. A new date has yet to be arranged.

Bartlett said: “Speedway fans gain big time whenever the Wild-cats meet the Devils and tonight I’m expecting no different.

“The racing is always close and every point is hotly contested so we are hoping for a big crowd to add to the atmosphere.

“We’ve had so many last-heat deciders this year and it wouldn’t surprise me if this evening’s meeting went down to the wire.”

Last night’s postponement means Daniel Halsey will have the honour of making his debut in front of the Weymouth fans in this highly anticipated head-to-head.

Bartlett added: “Last night’s washout was disappointing but you cannot legislate for the weather. What it does mean is that Daniel will make his debut on our home track, and with Karl Mason in as well, it will be interesting to see how the team gels together.”

The Wildcats beat the Devils 49-41 on their home track in the National League on July 24, but the Devon outfit will no doubt want revenge for that.

Wildcats: Bekker, Cockle, Brown, Mason, Halsey, Cottham, Andrews.

Devils: Glanz, Pickard, Bates, Stephens, Simmonds, Gough, Reade.
