NEWLY-CROWNED champions Wellworthy rounded off the Premiership campaign in style with victory at Greenhill.

Having already secured the title, Wellies could have been forgiven for letting their guard down but instead they displayed the same level of determination that has served them so well, and ran out worthy winners.

Wellworthy’s first rink of Roy Burnett, Maurice Haylock, Graham Parker and skip Ryan Stone opened up a 9-2 lead against the four of Harry Hovenden, Doug Obee, Mike Durrant and D Grey.

But by the 16th end the home quartet had fought their way back and moved one shot clear at 15-14.

Wellworthy dug in and claimed the last two ends to sneak a single-shot success.

The visitors’ second rink of John Always, Alan Jones, David Hanger and Tony Sargent found themselves 11 shots adrift after 12 ends against Chris Cook, Marcus Smith, Kevin Walbridge and David Ralph.

The deficit was reduced to four – 17-13 – by the end of the contest to leave Greenhill three shots in front heading into the final rink.

Wellies’ Barry Adams, Graham Reed, Joe Wahnon and skip Stuart Reed were up against Ed Smith, John Crabb, Ron McCarthy and Barry Patterson, and in a low scoring game the two teams were level at 10 apiece after 14 ends.

However, Reed’s rink upped the tempo with some impressive drawing shots and they recorded seven unanswered shots, not only to take the final rink, but also the overall match for an 8-2 points triumph.

Meanwhile, there was more success for Wellworthy in the President’s Cup as, after overcoming Bridport A, they defeated Dorchester in a closely-fought final.
