JUBILANT Phil Bartlett is predicting that last night’s victory over the King’s Lynn Young Stars will be the springboard for more National League success.
The Weymouth Weyline Wildcats fashioned an eventful 49-41 victory at the Wessex Raceway, which enabled them to clamber off bottom spot for the first time this season.
But they left it late as James Cockle (13) and Adam McKinna (10+3) combined for a 5-1 final-heat win that condemned King’s Lynn to the foot of the table.
And chairman Bartlett, who lauded his two “standout performers”, believes his side’s formidable home form can aid their quest to finish the campaign in a respectable position.
He told Echosport: “It’s good to get off bottom spot and I think we will gradually move up the table, we definitely should be able to climb a few more places yet.
“We have managed to strengthen up in terms of personnel and I’m confident we will be able to keep our home record going. It’s hugely difficult away, but we’ve shown we can keep our fans happy at home.”
On Cockle and McKinna’s dazzling heat-15 performance, Bartlett added: “I looked down on the scoresheet and knew that I wanted James and Adam in it.
“We always have a policy that the top two riders on the night go in heat 15. I didn’t expect them both to get past Simon Lambert but it is speedway and, as I’ve said before, anything can happen.
“James and Adam have been the two standout performers for us recently. Adam has been superb since he’s been at the club and appreciates that we gave him an opportunity to ride after he broke his neck.
“We are providing good entertainment. Last-heat deciders always keep everyone on the edge of their seats and you can’t better entertainment that that.”
Byron Bekker and James Cockle will represent the Weymouth Wildcats at Newport today (2.30pm) in the National League Best Pairs.
