SEAN Fitzgerald and Dave Trotter have been called up to face Ferndown Wayfarers at Redlands tomorrow as Weymouth turn to experience in a bid to beat the Dorset Premier League drop (1.30pm).
The talented duo performed superbly for the second string last Saturday in a crushing win over Corfe Mullen and the Seasiders’ selectors clearly feel their inclusion could be the tonic that is required following three successive defeats.
Fitzgerald scored 95 against Corfe while Trotter picked up 2-35, and Weymouth skipper Paul Payne is looking forward to seeing the experienced pair back in the side.
He said: “We have been struggling the last few games so Sean and Dave have been drafted in this week, replacing Kieron Womble, who will drop into the seconds, and Michael Pearce, who suffered a hamstring injury at Dorchester last Saturday.
“You always know what you are going to get with Sean and Trots. Sean scored 95 last week for the seconds and will hopefully bolster our batting, while Trots will add some experience to our bowling attack.
“No one has performed consistently in the first team this year and the aim now is to make sure we stay up so we can regroup in the winter and come back much stronger next summer.”
Title-chasing Dorchester brushed aside the Seasiders last Saturday in a seven-wicket success but Payne is tipping his men to respond in the correct manner by ending the campaign on a high.
He added: “Dorchester are a strong side but we know we can perform much better and with four of our last six games being at home we will be looking to finish the season strongly. Three of those last six are massive encounters against teams around us in the table so it is going to be very interesting to see how it all pans out.
“We have played Ferndown a few times and beat them at their place earlier this season by six wickets. Hopefully we will be able to put on a similar performance against them this time around but we know it is going to be tough as they are in the same position as us and will no doubt be fighting hard for the points.”
Weymouth currently sit third bottom in Dorset’s top-flight, one place below Ferndown, who have lost four out of their last five games.
Weymouth: Payne, Ryall, J Armfield, Fitzgerald, Janaway, McKay, Falloon, Doidge, Whyte, Trotter, Hutchens.
* Skipper John Ryan will be hoping for more of the same from Weymouth Seconds when they travel to struggling Ferndown Wayfarers Seconds in Division One tomorrow (1.30pm).
The Seasiders pulled off a superb 145-run success over Corfe Mullen at Redlands last Saturday, a result that catapulted them into the top four.
However, Ryan has been forced to make three changes to that side due to Fitzgerald and Trotter being promoted to the first team and the unavailability of Vijay Mote.
Replacing the trio will be the returning Faraz Ulhaq, Joe Weld and Kieron Womble, who comes down from the first team.
Weymouth: Almond, Womble, Ulhaq, Mitchem, Johnson, C Armfield, Carrington, Walton, Allen, Weld, Ryan.
* Weymouth Thirds will be hoping to enhance their grip on top spot tomorrow when they take on Puddletown at Redlands (2pm).
