MORE than 200 Year Six pupils from schools across the area were invited to a sports festival at Wey Valley School & Sports College.
Enthusiastic youngsters from St John’s, Radipole, Wyvern, Bincombe Valley, St Andrew’s as well as St Nicholas and St Laurence all attended the day.
The pupils tried their hand at six sporting activities such as wave boarding, trampolining, golf, football, beach lifeguarding, volleyball and the Adizone fitness area at Redlands.
These activities were run by 60 Year Nine sports leaders from Wey Valley, coaches from Weymouth Golf Club, RNLI Beach Lifeguards and the Wey Valley PE department.
Each school competed against one another to collect points and at the end of the day St Nicholas and St Laurence was declared the winner.
Pupils from Wyvern were integrated into the school teams and took part in all the activities and competitions with real determination.
All the youngsters received a certificate of participation, while sports leaders presented stickers to those that they felt had worked hard and shown great team spirit.
The objective of the sports festival was to introduce the Year Six pupils to a variety of activities available to them within the setting of a secondary school and the local community.
Leaflets about club links were distributed to pupils if they wanted to access an activity again. The day also encouraged them to develop their team-working skills and to take part in friendly competition.
Organiser Tanya Howlett, Wey Valley School sports co-ordinator, said: “It was evident the Year Six pupils really enjoyed the day, which was illustrated by the enthusiasm and smiles on their faces.
“They experienced new activities and friendly competition while meeting new friends, and the Wey Valley Year Nine sports leaders were superb.
“They worked hard all day with the Year Six pupils, putting into practice the excellent leadership skills they have acquired from the sports leaders’ programme they have been following in their PE lessons.”
