TEENAGE spinner Jack Leach made a dynamic start to his Dorset career by plundering six wickets against Herefordshire at Dean Park yesterday.

In a devastating Town End spell, the 19-year-old left-arm spin wizard reduced the visitors from 106-1 to 174-8 on his Minor Counties Championship debut for Dorset.

Herefordshire were eventually dismissed for 230 in 82.3 overs as the Somerset Seconds' dual registration player ended the first day of the three-day contest with impressive figures of 6-78.

Dorset reached 155-5 in 45 overs in reply before the close, with Darren Cowley blasting 48 and Aaron Williams 22.

It meant Dorset, who bagged the maximum four bowling points, headed into today 75 runs behind Herefordshire.

Leach, studying for a degree in sport development and coaching at University of Wales Institute, Cardiff, tore into Herefordshire’s batting after openers David Exall and Craig Wood had raced to 71 in 21 overs.

Rupes Kitzinger, on his Dorset return after a lengthly absence, had Wood caught behind by wicket-keeper Chris Park for 38 with Herefordshire on 75.

Then Leach, who plays for Cardiff-Glamorgan University and is also on Somerset’s books, took over.

He removed Steve Adshead for nine before sending Exall (61), Chris Boroughs (12), Faisal Shahid (3), Atiq Chishti (26) and Daniel Vernon (17) back to the pavilion.

Tom Hicks chipped in with 3-63.
