JAMIE Frampton is on a mission to win a place in the Magpies’ starting XI for the first match of the 2010/11 season.
The defender pulled on a Dorchester Town shirt for the first time last weekend as he played 90 minutes in the 2-0 defeat at Wimborne Town.
Despite the scoreline, Frampton impressed at centre-half and the 18-year-old is now hell-bent on earning a spot in the team that visits Bromley in the Blue Square Bet South curtain-raiser next month.
The ex-Terra, who is expected to feature in the home friendlies against Crawley Town (tonight, 7.45pm) and Dagenham & Redbridge (tomorrow, 3pm), said: “Ashley Vickers has said that nobody is guaranteed a first-team place.
“If people aren’t performing then those who are will get the shirt, and once you get it you have to do everything in your power to keep it.
“I’m really enjoying it at Dorchester, I’m getting on with all the lads and there’s a really good atmosphere at the club, which I knew there would be.
“I just want to get as many games under my belt as I can in pre-season and show what I can do in order to push for a place in the team for the first game of the season.”
Reflecting on the loss at Cuthbury, in which the Magpies fielded several trialists, Frampton added: “I enjoyed it, it took a while to get back into the swing of things but as the game wore on we started to dominate and should have scored to at least get a draw.
“Their second goal came against the run of play but at the moment it’s all about fitness.
“I don’t think anybody, besides the likes of Regan Coward, Jake Smeeton, Harry Montacute and Steve Devlin had ever really played together.
“But we created enough chances, Devs missed a penalty, and we were just unlucky at times.”
Boss Ashley Vickers is expected to make full use of his compliment of players as the Magpies enter this weekend’s double-header.
However, the 38-year-old is not ex-pected to field any new trialists from those who featured against Wimborne.
He said: “Some players will play more than others but both games are an opportunity to look at trialists and improve fitness.”
Meanwhile, the Magpies will host Springfield Hotel FC in a friendly on Saturday, July 24 following Salisbury City’s cancellation earlier this week.
Vickers added: “Springfield play in the Dorset Sunday League and the guy who runs them has offered us use of the facilities there, so rather than have no fixture we will play them.”
* Fans who purchase tickets for tonight’s game with Crawley will gain free entry to tomorrow’s friendly with the Daggers, providing they retain their ticket. Contact the club on 262451 for more details.
