WEYMOUTH will seek redemption in tomorrow’s clash with arch-rivals Dorchester (1.30pm).
Skipper Paul Payne labelled the six-wicket defeat to Dorchester back in May as one of the Seasiders’ worst displays of the Dorset Premier League season.
And the opening batsman is desperate to avoid a repeat show when the two sides meet at the Rec.
Looking ahead to the derby date, Payne said: “I’m looking forward to it as always but hopefully we’ll put in a better performance than we did at Redlands.
“We have not been the most consistent this season and that game against Dorchester was one of our worst performances, so we’ll look to put things right tomorrow.
“We’ve been scoring runs lately and hopefully we’ll do the same tomorrow.
“We played both Parley and Poole when they were top and put in two of our best performances of the season, so we’ll be looking to do that again tomorrow and put pressure on Dorchester.
“There is more pressure on them than there is on us but having said that we would rather be in their position.”
The county town side currently occupy top spot while the Seasiders lie dangerously close to second-bottom Wimborne & Colehill.
Payne added: “It’s really close at the moment and if you take out the top four teams there isn’t a lot between the rest of us.
“A couple of wins could take us into the top five but we aren’t thinking about that, we’re just taking each game as it comes.”
On the selection front, Payne is forced into just one change as the unavailable Matt Lawes is replaced by Ben Doidge.
The captain said: “Matt’s off to watch some of the Tour de France so Ben is back in the team. He played well at Poole and is very much up for the game, so I’ve got no problem with him coming in.”
Weymouth: Payne, Ryall, J Armfield, Womble, Janaway, McKay, Falloon, Doidge, M Pearce, Whyte, Hutchens.
* Weymouth Seconds will be out for revenge when they host Corfe Mullen in Dorset League Division One action (1.30pm).
Skipper John Ryan said: “We took a youthful side to Corfe Mullen earlier in the season and just fell 18 runs short, hopefully we’ll reverse that tomorrow and bounce back from last week’s defeat.
“We’ve lost two experienced players to holiday in Andy Bray and Faraz Ulhaq so we’ve brought in Craig Johnson and Charlie Allen from the third team.
“They are used to playing in Division Five but this is the level they should aspire to.”
Weymouth Seconds: Almond, Fitzgerald, Johnson, Mote, Trotter, Carrington, Mitchem, Walton, Allen, C Armfield, Ryan.
* The thirds meanwhile, travel to face Corfe Mullen’s second string (2pm).
