Chickerell Primary School is the latest to have its name engraved on the Pengilly Cup, after winning the annual mini-tennis competition for primary schools.
Run by Weymouth Tennis Club, this year’s event was held at Redlands Community Sports Hub for children aged between six and eight on smaller, indoor courts with soft balls.
A record 10 teams entered with 46 children doing their best for their schools in a format that included singles and doubles, as well as a quiz, an agility test and a beat the coach competition.
Joe MacMillan, of Chickerell, won the latter competition following an amazing rally with head coach Julien Lawes.
Thornlow and Southwell entered for the first time, joining regular competitors Radipole, St Andrew’s, Holy Trinity, Southill and St John’s in a spirited competition.
The final was a hard fought match between Chickerell and Radipole Reds, with the former eventually coming out on top.
Although the winning team of Jamie Blair, Joe MacMillan, Josh Howell and Archie Partridge only dropped one game between them, this didn’t do justice to the standard of the opposition.
The energetic and attacking Chickerell team had to play at the top of their game to overcome the commitment and fighting spirit of the Radipole Reds.
At the Pengillys-sponsored event, all competitors received a prize and an invitation to join the junior coaching sessions at Weymouth Tennis Club.
